COURSE CONTENT
Intermediate level reading, writing, listening and speaking skills are practiced.  Cultural content deals with latinos in the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay,   and Spain.

Textbook : Navegando 2 (EMC Paradigm Publishing)

All students receive a workbook, which is used for daily practice and homework. The workbook is free, but if lost, a new workbook must be purchased at the price of $20.00.

GRADING PROCEDURE      The grade is obtained by combining the following elements:

Class Participation

10%

Oral, Written, Listening, and Reading Activities
Daily points are given for participation. Frequent absences or tardies will lower this portion of the total grade.

Tests, Quizzes, Projects 

60%

Homework

10%

All homework is due upon entry into the Spanish class.

Semester Exam                    

20%

Given at the end of the semester.   All students who wish to pass the course must pass the semester exam.

CLASS MATERIALS: Students will need to purchase a spiral binder for classroom activities. Students also need a 3-ring binder filled with lined paper to take notes, complete homework assignments, and store hand outs given during the class. A computer at home with access to the internet is very helpful, as well Microsoft Word and PowerPoint programs.

QUIZZES, EXAMS, PROJECTS
Students will take one quiz (50 points) and one chapter exam (100 points) every 3-4 weeks.
Group, pair and individual projects of varying levels of complexity will be assigned.   Students will receive a grading rubric for projects.

HOMEWORK
Homework is assigned daily and is due upon entering the classroom the following day. All assignments must be complete, neat and punctual or no credit will be given.  Daily homework assignments have a value of 5 or 10 points.

MAKE UP POLICY
Students are encouraged not to miss class. Class participation points may not be made up.  In the event of illness, students have as many days to make up missed work as they have been absent. If a student is truant, the truancy must be cleared before students will be allowed to make up work.

The textbook is linked to internet activities on the EMC Paradigm Website and I maintain a website with links to Spanish language activities, resources, and reference at sracantrell.com. The classroom is equipped with 18 computers for student usage.

IMPORTANT

  A grade of “C” or better at the end of the first semester of Spanish 2 is recommended for students wishing to continue with the second semester of Spanish 2.
